Governance and Mandate

The FNHDA is one of four governance partners within the made-in-BC Health Governance Structure created by Chiefs and leaders through the 2011 Consensus Paper and Resolution: BC First Nations Perspectives on a New Health Governance.

Our Association works alongside the First Nations Health Authority, which is responsible for the planning, management, delivery, and funding of health programs, and the First Nations Health Council, which provides political leadership to advance Tripartite commitments and support health priorities of BC First Nations. Together, the three partners share a common vision for Healthy, Self-Determining and Vibrant BC First Nation Children, Families and Communities.

This Health Governance Structure is a first of its kind in Canada – and one of only a few in the world. The FNHDA is overseen by an elected Board of Directors made up of Members, and is the only association of its kind in Canada, created by First Nations Health Directors to support them in their health leadership roles.

The governance structure and mandate of the FNHDA, as well as our FNHC and FNHA partners, is illustrated below.

The Board’s purpose is to ensure that the Association is meeting the interests and needs of our members according to the FNHDA Constitution and Bylaws, mandate and strategic plan.
